USID2012: Design for Mobile & Mobility
6th India International Design Innovation & UX Conference
Mobile devices penetration has reached 6.6 billion (Year 2011) across the world; this growth is mainly driven by India & China (As per the data till March 2012, there are 919,170,000 phones in use in India & China have 1,010,000,000 phones in use), which comprises 30% of the world mobile phone penetration. Recently government of India new telecom policy plans to cover 100 percent rural population with mobile phone connectivity & subscription by 2020.
The platform has been set. A mobile device has been handed to most people on this planet, and in the coming days, the number of people owning a mobile device is going to rise. More and more rural population will able to connect using mobile phones and devices. Influx of touch-based and gesture-based interfaces flooding the markets especially the upper end of the marketplace. The experiences may need to be device agnostic for some, and may need to be seamless across multiple gadgets that invade our life today. How will you find out what customers want, and then build on it, is going to be the most interesting mobility evolution in the coming years.
Especially in the emerging markets, where there are at least 100 different languages that people speak in, Device adoption literacy fluctuates, as frequently, as you could imagine, Accessibility problems need to be tackled, Adoption challenges of solutions and services may need to be personalized, at levels which we cannot even fathom today.
All this makes it more critical that the Design Thinking must effectively kick in into this domain:
Taking this forward USID2012 Conference will focus and discuss following but limited to as the part of the conference agenda, sessions and events:
- What mobility is, what it means to the different users, to which extend the users activities are linked to the need for mobility? Does the concept of mobility also mean mobility in the sense of spreading activities in time and space
- How would you design a diverse ecosystem to enhance the mobile computing experience for all end consumers? And still have a formidable business model to sustain market growth and expansion.
- How mobile and concept of mobility will enable larger impact on healthcare, education and social innovation?
- How to touch + gesture, new growth area in interface, can be explored more, to design application, considering cultural and ethnographic aspects to touch/haptics and having potential for social innovation.
- How to uncover local/indigenous ‘haptic cultures’ and use them as springboards to conceptualize new technologies and applications?
- How the mobile technologies, people needs, expectations & desires and public/government policies will evolve in the future.
- What if there is no device, as it is unaffordable to the users. What are the alternatives to support mobility in a completely different way?
