USID2014: Design for Democracy

8th India International Design Innovation & UX  Conference

Dates and Venue will be updated soon

What drives a successful democracy? Literacy, Free speech & expression, Effective & informed electioneering, People engagement & participation in the democratic system and transparent governance.

The recent agitations and movements all over the world by people against their governments (including democracies) of the world is a clear indicator that the citizens are profoundly disenchanted with their governments and policy makers. People all across are becoming more socially and politically aware and their expectations from their governments are increasing every day.

Free speech and expression plays an important role in the effectiveness of any democracy. In the recent time technology enabled social media tools like Facebook, Twitter, Blogs etc. has helped a lot in creating effective public awareness and providing the opportunity to the people to express their opinion on various topics including politics and social issues. Can design help in making the social media tools more effective, accessible and increase its reach to mass population irrespective of their socio-economic and geographical considerations. Can design enable more tools to help in enhancing free speech and expression for the betterment of the democracy?

The opportunity to vote is a fundamental democratic right to the citizen of any country. It is at the polling booth that the process of government becomes tangible to the people. Can design help in increasing the literacy including political literacy among the people. Can it bring transparency and efficiency in the process of voter registration, making voting accessible to all whilst enhancing the overall user experience for the voters? Can design ensure that the voters are able to make the informed decision?

The form of representative democracy where the role of the citizen is limited to the voting every few year for electing their representative is proving to be non-effective. Participatory democracy facilitating active political involvement of the citizens in the governance and policy making becoming very critical in order to ensure that all citizens benefit from the nation’s wealth. Can design enable active participation of citizen and their involvement in the democratic system?

Non-transparency in the governance, lack of accountability amaong political system, bureaucracy and lack of participation in the democratic system by the people is not letting the goods of democracy reaching to the citizens leading to disenchantment /disillusionment of the people from their governments, policy makers and overall political system. Question arises, how can democracy be improved in an age when people are profoundly disenchanted/dissatisfied with their governments? Can design enable the enhanced people participation and their freedom of expression and can it bring transparency and efficiency in governance and policymaking?

USID2014 Conference on theme “Design for Democracy” is an attempt to discuss, debate, evolve and understand how Design Thinking and Design Tools can drive a successful democracy? How Design can play a critical role in increasing civic participation by making interactions between the Governments and its citizens more understandable, efficient and trustworthy. How design can help in inviting more collaboration, communication and consultation between the political system, bureaucracy and the citizens.
