Life, culture, and context of use for end users in the emerging markets are different to users in markets such as Europe and America. Therefore it is not necessary that the product which is successful in other parts of the world will also be successful in the markets of emerging economies. It is critical that professionals and organizations must research and understand the culture, context and needs of these people before they design any products, applications, or services for emerging markets.

USID Gurukul
USIDgurukul 2010 is inspiration taken from “Gurukul” a school concept coming from ancient India which is residential in nature, with shishyas (students) living in proximity to the guru (teachers), often within the same house. In a gurukul, shishyas reside together as equals, irrespective of their social standing, learn from the guru and help the guru in his day-to-day life.
USIDgurukul 2010 will bring together students (around 30 to 40 students selected from the field of design, technology & management) and 6 to 8 mentors (form academic and professional world of design, technology & management), who will go through a deep, inspirational, motivational and authentic experience of exploring, learning, sharing and creating together for a whole period of 10 days at the campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur.
These students will be divided in a team of 6 to 8 participants and one mentor will be responsible for each of these teams. On the first day of the gurukul, the teams will be assigned the domain/theme and the teams will go through exploration to creation of some solution/object around that theme under the guidance of their mentors. There will be some common frameworks, activities and sessions from external speakers, performers and field trips which will be mandatory for all the teams and will be planned in advance. Other then these sessions, the process, schedule and other activities are left on the discretion of the individual mentors and their teams. All the session with external speakers/ presentations/ performances will be open for other students as well.
